What does a typical day
look like for you?
As a chartered building surveyor, I am involved in a wide variety of work including professional advice on dilapidations, leases, building defects and insurance together with project based work such as refurbishment, conversion and new build instructions mainly on commercial property but also some residential.
What skills do you need to be successful in your role?
Being adaptable to deal with different situations and people is very important. I meet clients who have varying degrees of knowledge related to construction and property matters so it is essential to offer appropriate advice that is clear and well defined so that important decisions can be made.
What’s your favourite project so far?
There have been many but my most notable has been managing and delivering a CAT A refurbishment project on 20,000 sqft of office space in central Bath during 2017. The project lasted for four months and we transformed the building into modern open-plan office space. I worked closely with our business space agency colleagues to assist in re-letting the space on completion. A great team effort.

What does a typical
day look like for you?
My day begins with catching up
on emails and phone calls and checking my diary for the day.
I will usually carry out an inspection around 10am – for example a site meeting with a contractor to check on progress (this could be for refurbishment works or external repair works etc) or a survey inspection for example
a building survey, insurance valuation or a schedule of condition. I work on a range of buildings from offices, retail units to industrial units. I will always have a notebook and camera with me and if there are building works going on I will also have site boots, hi-viz and a hard hat with me.
A morning inspection can take anything between an hour to three hours depending on the type of inspection/survey I am doing.
When I return to the office I will usually catch up on emails and
calls again.
The afternoon then consists of follow up work from my morning inspection. This will be writing up and circulating my notes from site, uploading any photographs taken on site and making follow up phone calls.
I will then organise my diary for the following day. If it is the end of the week I will also fill out my APC diary for the week which is a summary/record of the work I have carried out that week.
